America’s Promise Alliance and the Duke University Center for Child and Family Policy have announced the findings of the final evaluation of the America’s Promise Dropout Prevention Summits.

Research indicates one of the greatest impediments to learning is stress. Because most students lack the skills needed to handle daily pressures such as bullying, drugs, alcohol, peer pressure, or violence, they are unable to focus or concentrate, may have low self-esteem, anxiety, or even depression.

After surveying her peers and establishing a Facebook group, Akron student Kaliah Nash held a conference of her fellow students, business people, community members, and college students from the educational field to discuss the creation of an ongoing program to raise graduation rates. Nash started her project with funds from a joint AT&T and America’s Promise program called My Idea Grants.
Business-Education Collaborative Summits to convene in 4 cities
America’s Promise Alliance will host a series of Business-Education Collaborative Summits, bringing together local and national business, education, nonprofit and philanthropic leaders to learn about the latest data on the economic impact of the high school dropout crisis and how they can work together more effectively to improve schools and communities.
The first summit will be held in Charlotte, NC on June 11-12 with three others in Boston, MA on September 13-14; Denver, CO on December 3-4 and Los Angeles, CA in January 2013. They are sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, State Farm® and Target.
Communities cannot foster their youth without providing for them examples of success and giving them helpers to push themselves to greatness.
